Verification Of Competency (VOC) Assessments

Onsite VOC Assessments for Mining & Plant Operators

Raines Resources provides onsite Verification of Competency (VOC) assessments for experienced mining and plant operators. VOC assessments help employers confirm that workers can operate machinery safely, competently and to current workplace and site requirements.

Assessments can be conducted onsite using the equipment and operating conditions your workforce encounters every day, making the process practical, relevant and efficient.

With more than 30 years of mining and heavy-equipment experience, Raines Resources provides practical competency assessments for businesses and worksites across Australia.

Raines Resources is proud to be inducted on various mine sites including FMG, BHP, Rio Tinto and MRL.

Who can complete a VOC Assessment?

Verification of Competency is designed for experienced operators who already hold evidence of the relevant competency or qualification being assessed. A VOC confirms that the operator can continue to perform the task safely and competently to the required workplace standard.

Verification of competency FAQs

A Verification of Competency (VOC) assessment confirms that an experienced worker can still perform a task or operate machinery safely and competently to the required workplace standard. A VOC is generally used to verify existing skills and competency rather than to train a beginner from scratch.

VOC assessments are commonly used by mining, construction and industrial employers to confirm that operators have current, practical skills before performing work on site. They can be particularly relevant when starting with a new employer, mobilising to another site, returning to equipment after time away, or where an employer requires evidence that an operator’s competency remains current.

Yes. A VOC is designed to verify an existing competency. You should already hold valid, documented evidence of the relevant unit of competency, licence or qualification being assessed. If you do not already hold the required competency, you may need to complete the full training course instead.

The time required depends on the machinery or competency being assessed, the operator’s experience and the requirements of the workplace or employer. A VOC normally includes practical assessment and may also include questions or other checks to confirm the operator understands safe operating procedures and workplace requirements. Specific assessment times can be confirmed with Raines Resources when booking.

There is no single universal expiry period that applies to every VOC. Employers, mine sites and contractors may set their own requirements for how recently competency must have been verified. Some major employers require periodic reassessment, so workers and businesses should confirm the requirements of the particular site or organisation.

Yes. Raines Resources can conduct onsite Verification of Competency assessments, allowing operators to be assessed using the machinery, workplace procedures and operating conditions they encounter in their normal work environment. Onsite assessment can also reduce travel and downtime for businesses with multiple workers requiring verification.

Raines Resources provides VOC assessments for a range of mining and heavy plant equipment, including Integrated Tool Carrier (ITC) Loaders, Production Loaders, Articulated and Rigid Haul Trucks, Excavators and Dozers including D9, D10 and D11.

Contact Raines Resources if you need a VOC for other plant or equipment, as assessment options may depend on the machinery, competency and site requirements.

Yes. Raines Resources provides onsite training and Verification of Competency services for mining, construction and industrial workplaces across Australia. Businesses can arrange assessments at their own site, helping ensure operators are assessed in conditions relevant to their actual work.

If an operator cannot demonstrate the required level of competency during the assessment, this identifies areas where additional training, supervised practice or skills development may be required before reassessment. The purpose of a VOC is to verify that an operator can perform the relevant task safely and competently, rather than simply issue a pass regardless of performance.

A full training course is designed to develop the required skills and knowledge and lead toward the relevant qualification or unit of competency. A VOC is an assessment for someone who already holds the relevant competency and needs to demonstrate that their existing skills remain current.

Mining operations use VOC assessments to help confirm that workers can operate equipment safely, follow current workplace procedures and perform their duties to the standard required by the employer or site. A worker may hold an existing qualification but still be asked to demonstrate current competency before mobilisation or undertaking particular duties.

Onsite VOC provides real working conditions in the same machinery they’ll be operating in day-to-day. This gives them practical experience and a clear understanding of their role in the operation.

Plus, onsite training is more cost-effective than sending your workers to an RTO and paying for travel and accommodation.
